Memory
The human brain is like a library that stocks memories instead of books. Memories allow us to perform tasks, remember past events, and use this to react to current situations. Memories shapes us.
Types of Memory
There are two kinds of memory — short-term and long-term. Short-term memory is the kind of memory the brain uses to store small pieces of information needed immediately, like someone’s name when you meet for the first time. Long-term memory on the other hand, encompasses memories that range from a few days to years. When you study for a test or exam, that’s long-term memory at work.
Improving your memory
There are various MEMORY TECHNIQUES which allow you to tap into your long term memory and retrieve information when needed.
- Learn from the general to the specific – get big picture or concepts first. This will make understanding of details easier.
- Create associations – the brain is similar to a file cabinet and so try to make connections with previous knowledge or concept
- Use Mnemonics throughout study
- Implement several memory building devices.
